RICHMOND, Va.: Today, HB 1803 was laid on the table in the Commerce and Labor Subcommittee #1 on a party-line voice vote.
“I’m devastated that steps weren’t taken today to do the right thing for our correctional officers in Virginia,” said Delegate John J. Bell (D - Loudoun). “Our correctional officershave fewer benefits, lower pay, and work in some of the worst conditions in the state. It’s time that we stepped up and took care of our employees and treated them with dignity and respect. There’s a lot of work to be done to bring correctional officers even with their counterparts in other public safety agencies, and this would have been a good first step toward that goal.”
HB 1803 allows for correctional officers to get workers compensation benefits if they contract certain communicable diseases while in the line of duty, such as tuberculosis and HIV.
