CHANTILLY, Va.: Today, Delegate John J. Bell (D – Loudoun) introduced two bills that help protect correctional officers from the hazards of their jobs.
“Correctional officers are the most overlooked heroes of our society. It’s unconscionable that they don’t get the same protections as other peace officers that help maintain the dignity of our state employees,” said Delegate John J. Bell. “With these two bills I hope to make sure correctional officers can take breaks, have health care protections, and receive the dignity these heroes deserve.”
HB 107 increases the number of diseases that are covered under the presumption of cause under workers compensation laws to include certain cancers and HIV.
HB 108 requires all correctional officers to complete an exit interview upon leaving the Department of Corrections, and an annual report from the Department on why attrition rates are so high amongst correctional officers.
